About Barrow-in-Furness

Barrow-in-Furness is an industrial town and seaport which forms about half the territory of the wider Borough of Barrow-in-Furness in the county of Cumbria, England. It lies 100 km (62 mi) northwest of Manchester and 90 km (56 mi) southwest from the county town of Carlisle. The town is situated at the tip of the Furness peninsula bordered only by Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea. Barrow is located some 360 km (just over 220 miles) north-west of London and 60 miles south of the Scottish border.

Historically a part of Lancashire until 1974, Barrow was a small fishing village (consisting of Cornish miners and indivduals originating from Scandinavia) before the arrival of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-19th century (when mass immigration from Scotland and elsewhere in England boosted the size of the local population to what it is today).

Barrow's principal road link is the A590, linking it to Ulverston, the Lake District and to the M6 motorway. Just north of Barrow is the southern terminus of the A595, linking the town to Whitehaven, Workington and eventually Carlisle. Walney Bridge connects Barrow Island to Walney Island.
