In tribute to Taylor’s love for punk music, bands brought their ‘a-game’, performing with their utmost energy and enthusiasm. Mirroring a good old backyard shin-dig, the set up was laid back with bonfires and everyone in high spirits. Although you felt a little out of place without a drink in your hand, the quality of music coming from the tin-shed stage was nothing short of uniting.
Spacers, piercings and punk slogans were out in force with local and avid followers alike, being treated to bands such as Myself Destruction, Order 66 and Junkyard Diamonds. Despite the very late start, Junkyard Diamonds were eagerly awaited, and with very good reason!
Mitch Rich, Mitch Huge, BJ, Jimmy Bibby and Dil, although a few drinks later, were probably the stand out of the night. When you think of grunge, hip-hop, reggae and hardcore mashed together, you may reach for the industrial ear muffs. But don’t be too hasty my friends!! The Rage Against the Machine-esque band’s clever melodies, smooth and funky bass lines, and blended vocals, create a sound that demands to be heard.
Defying the toe-numbing cold and the fact it was 2am, a mosh pit swiftly came to life and lifted the band’s performance to another level. Elevated by Dil’s drum jumping, floor twisting ways, this performance commanded downright attention, and that’s exactly what they got.
As 3am rolled around and you felt as though your nose was going to snap off, and you walked out to your car, cab or horse, a message rang clear,
“Look out for each other, and never give up.” How lucky we are to be able to celebrate such a worthy cause through the magic of music.
